Planning a holiday for all the family can be somewhat daunting, especially if a couple of cousins and the grandparents decide to join in on the fun. Is there a destination that can keep a clan whose ages range between three and 63 happy? Holiday accommodation rental company Best of Gozo can think of plenty of good reasons why the island of Gozo fits the bill, but here are their top five!

  1. The Short Distances

It is safe to say that nobody likes to waste precious holiday time driving or travelling to get someplace, with the children asking “are we there yet?” every few minutes. Given that Gozo covers an area of just 67 km2, getting from one spot to the next should be the very least of your worries.

While walking and taking in the beautiful scenery on the way can do the trick in spring and autumn, renting a vehicle or hopping on to public transport is highly recommended during the summer months when temperatures start hitting the high 30s and, at times, even the low 40s. Check out how you can explore the island by bus here.

  1. The Bays & Beaches

Sandy beaches may draw squeals of delight from the younger members of the group, but they very often do not elicit the same reaction from adults who know all too well how difficult it is to get sand out of things.

From the ochre sands of Ramla Bay and the white sands of Ħondoq ir-Rummien, to the pebble-strewn Xwejni Bay and the more secluded gorge-like Wied il-Għasri, there’s a beach for every family member – and every day of the week – on the island of Gozo. To top it off, Ramla Bay and Ħondoq ir-Rummien enjoy Blue Flag status, awarded on the merits of water quality, rescue services, first aid posts and other facilities on site! 1. The Water Activities

While members of the family who are looking for pure rest and relaxation can do just that on the island’s beaches, the more adventurous ones can easily get up to more. Diving with one of the many registered dive schools on the island will allow you to appreciate Gozo’s enthralling underwater world, which offers opportunities for beginners, with spots like Dwejra’s Coral Garden, right through to advanced divers, with spots like the stunning Cathedral Cave.

SUP and kayaking, which have become all the rage in recent years, are two other water-based activities that will allow you to discover hidden caves and tucked-away bathing spots, which are not very easily accessible from land, with some help from a seasoned guide. You can also go on a boat ride to explore Gozo’s beautiful coast.

  1. The Walks and Hikes

If you’re visiting Gozo, do pack a pair of sturdy shoes that will allow you to explore as much of the island as possible on foot. Do not feel discouraged if you are travelling with the young ones in tow or older family members, as even the simplest walk along the coast is guaranteed to reward you with breathtaking scenery coupled with unparalleled tranquillity. In summer, there’s nothing more rewarding than ending a walk in the sultry weather with a revitalising dip in the sea, and in spring and winter, the verdant countryside and the sweet smell of wild chamomile sprouting from the craggy cliffs are a right treat for the senses. 5.     The Laid-Back Life

Life in Gozo is still pretty much laid back, particularly in the smaller villages, meaning that the slower pace of the island will allow you relax and blissfully slip right into holiday mode. This is not to say that there is not much going on in Gozo!

The island comes particularly alive in summer, with traditional feasts being celebrated in different village every week and colourful fireworks displays lighting up the skies as part of the celebrations. A number of festivals and open-air concerts held throughout the season will have you sorted for some vibrant evening entertainment featuring top local talent. And if you happen to visit in October and love opera, you may want to check out one of the two top-notch opera productions the island puts up during this month. Aida and Carmen will be marking the 2022 comeback of opera on the island of Gozo following a COVID-induced hiatus.
